Your Week In Paris. What I Wore Part II! (Allison Parris! Speechless Dresses! CAT Footwear!)

The DivaGals spent an incredible week in Paris for the wedding of our dear pal and love expert Samantha Bessuedo Drucker – her new married name – who wrote our series 90 Days To Find A Husband, read it! Now it’s time for some of our fave outfits worn by our own Luxury Gal, Maureen Martin!

When traveling, wear comfortable shoes like these from Rebecca Minkoff , carry distinguishable luggage by Max Mirani and keep your travel documents handy.

Keep style effortless in the arrondissements with flat shoes from CAT Footwear and scarves like the locals. This lightweight jumpsuit by Splendid looks pulled together and is very comfortable for a day of sightseeing.

The best part of dressing up in Paris is the gorgeous historic settings. I paired my favorite Allison Parris skirt with my Club Monaco sequin jacket – you can get your own here. … I couldn’t resist this Juliette window. What a treat to be invited for cocktails in a classic Paris apartment!

Paris was unseasonably hot so for the civil wedding ceremony, so I wore loose pastels. Top by John Lewis, pants by Zara and shoes by Pure Navy.

Before the main event, we enjoyed cocktails at Le Cinq Codet with the bride-to-be at and her matron of honor. I wore 70’s era vintage embedded with crystals. Embellish with a chunky crystal bangle.

For the wedding on the Seine, it was all out glam! I paired a bespoke corset with ostrich feathers and a silk red skirt.

Paris wouldn’t be Paris without our Speechless dresses! We happened onto a casual party scene along a French canal … I kept it loose with Speechless’ off shoulder dress.

FIT SUMMER. A Body Straight From The Yard with CONBODY @ Kimpton Ink 48!

Hello Divas! TV DivaGal here with my quest to try all types of exercise classes this summer and expand my repertoire to strengthen and heal my body and soul.

With that in mind, I found myself at the Kimpton Ink 48 hotel rooftop on the west side of Manhattan about to take ConBody. What is ConBody? This fitness trend is the brainchild of Coss Marte, who spent several years in incarceration. Yes dolls, this is is a real-life prison yard inspired workout!

Arriving on the scene I quickly learned that ConBody has some pretty devoted followers. One gal told me this was her first workout of the day; she goes to ConBody twice daily. Her body certainly showed it. ConBody founder Coss actually taught this morning’s class. He started us off with drills – jumping jacks, pushups, etc., the rock-solid basics that get you pumping. It was then drills across the “yard” in a series of sprints, lunges, crawls – pretty much contorting your body in a ton of different ways to push it harder.

We made a circle and did rounds of calisthenics in a wave pattern, adding on a rep after each person in the circle had finished a round. I literally thought the kid next to me was going to lose his breakfast – but with the mentality of what doesn’t break me makes me stronger, he persevered.

At the end of class, we all had to “bus our way” (per a low duck squat) to Coss and give him a high five for surviving our sentence and coming out better and stronger. It’s not hard to do the time with ConBody as workouts last between 23 to 45 minutes. Coss has a pretty clear vision of why he started ConBody and how he’s helping others – but I’ll let him tell it below.

Check out the next ConBody class at Kimpton Ink 48 (for classpass click here) on July 2. Learn more about ConBody here.

YOUR WEEK IN PARIS. 6 Secrets You Need to Know Before Visiting Paris!

The DivaGals spent an incredible week in Paris for the wedding of our dear pal and love expert Samantha Bessuedo Drucker – her new married name – who wrote our series 90 Days To Find A Husband, read it!

There’s no doubt that Paris is one of the world’s finest cities with its bags of history and a culture that’s easy to fall in love with – and boy oh boy, is it pretty! If you’ve got your first trip to the French capital on the horizon, whoop whoop! It’s a stunning place. Now that the DivaGals are experts, there are some things you might want to know to make your trip stellar! We’ve helpfully compiled some useful information below. Bon voyage!

A Tale of Two Cities

OK, so Paris is technically made up of some twenty neighborhoods, known as the arrondissements – but the first-time visitor may be a little confused to learn that this gorgeous area is broken up by a body of water known as Seine River – leading to a Left and Right bank sitch. The Left Bank, known as “La Rive Gauche,” is on the south side of the Seine and made up of six arrondissements. It’s where you’ll Montparnasse (in the 14th arrondissement), the Latin Quarter (in the 5th and 6th arrondissements) where Breakfast In America resides, the Panthéon (pictured) and the famed Eiffel Tower.

The Right Bank, “La Rive Droite” has been considered the more ritzy side. It is the home of the Champs-Elysees, Arc de Triomphe (pictured) and Louvre Museum. It’s made up of the 16 remaining arrondissements, including one of our fave finds, the 16th.

A walk in this area will unveil cobble street shops, cute outdoor bistros and Maison de la Radio, the headquarters of Radio France. On the Avenue du Président Kennedy, a high-end residential area is located in the street’s oldest buildings. You can also check out the Palais de Chaillot, another museum that gives the Louvre a run for her money.

So how will you get to both sides? There’s always the Metro. And if you’re staying in the 15th or 16th arrondissement, they are connected by several bridges you can walk across.

Limber Up!

If you’re coming from the states, then you’re probably used to driving everywhere. This is not the case in Paris! We got the most out of the city by just walking around. Part of the charm of visiting is getting lost in the narrow, old streets and just simply taking the time to enjoy the stunning architecture. (According to our Samsung 9 health meter, we walked the most steps we’ve ever taken on a sunny afternoon in Paris!) Make sure that you have some comfortable shoes like those from CAT Footwear and click here for the best insoles.

It’s Good To Learn a Few Words

Parisians – and the French in general – are nowhere near as rude as some corners make out. But to make sure of a friendly reception, take the time to learn a few French words and phrases – it’ll stop you from being rude yourself. Knowing how to say “hello (bonjour),” ” please (si vous plait),”  “thank you (merci)” and “goodbye (au revoir)” is the least you can do, especially as they take all of one minute to learn.

Dress Well, But Don’t Over Do It

The people of Paris have truly mastered the art of simply chic. There is an ease about their style which seems polished and unfussy at the same time. If you want to look your best in Paris, pack your clean, crisp and tailored items. You can get inspiration from our What We Wore Series, Part I and Part II. Walking around in flip-flops is not a strong look in the stylish French capital – not to mention, you’re feet wouldn’t last more than a mile!

You Don’t Need a Massive Bank Account

Paris can be expensive, but talk of its high-cost are generally overblown.  You can find great deals online for hotels – just remember, when they say two people per room, they mean it! There’s one thing you can get very inexpensively all over Paris, and that’s wine! Look for places with great deals on meals, take the metro (only 1.90 Euros per ride!) and try Taxify, Paris’ cheap Uber, to get by without breaking the bank. Save your pennies to splurge on entry to the city’s world-class museums.

You’ll Be Back

And finally, know this: this won’t be your one and only trip! Paris changes from season to season, and you’ll want to return to see what else the City of Love has to offer!

Summer is the best time of year: warm sunshine, beach weather and summer parties. It’s time to break out of your shell and let loose! The 4th of July is officially on and I’ve got my beauty bag for the holiday weekend ready to stay glowing and showing!

GLOW. Skin is always in and I love a good highlighter. Celebrity make up artist Danessa Myricks Beauty has got it right with- I live for this! It’s the perfect shimmer/glow to mix in with your moisturizer or wear alone. I’ve even mixed a little with my body oil for an all-over glow. It’s a one and done with this.

PUCKER. A bright lipstick is a must and Khuraira  Creme Lipstick in Diva is my current favorite. I love this buildable bright orange color with pink undertones. This is the perfect summer color that pops with brown skin.

CARE. Protecting my skin from the suns harsh rays are key, so I’ve been using La Roche Posay Anthelios AOX Daily SPF 50 Sunscreen serum for a while. It blends in sheer, leaves absolutely no white ashy residue and protects brown skin from harmful UV rays. Another sheer alternative is by Korres Yoghurt Nourishing Fluid Veil SPF 30 for $35.

WEAR. Anyone that knows me knows I wear hats often. Summer is no different! A big floppy hat is a “got-to” for the weekend. I love this one from for only $20 at  Old Navy.

SWIM. Going away for the holiday weekend requires some time by the pool or beach. A bikini is a must. I always bring along a Jill Kelly Swim bikini. The reversible string bikini means I only need to bring one for the weekend to create different looks. Order yours at jillkellyswim@gmail.com.

Broadway On the Screen! Bandstand Dances Into Theaters (And On National Tour!)

It’s a tragedy when a Broadway musical ends its run. It’s a miracle when it is screened in theaters.

I unfortunately missed Bandstand during its 2017 Broadway run. But hearing its swanky toe-tapping soundtrack composed by Richard Oberacker with book and lyrics by Oberacker and Robert Taylor, I regret missing out.

Rejoice, it is a blessing Fathom Events made this knock-out musical accessible. Now I can see the kinetic choreography of Andy Blankenbuehler (he choreographed a little musical called Hamilton) in all its glory.

Fresh from the grime of World War II, Donny Novitski (Corey Cott of Newsies fame) comes home to an American of empty thank-you-for-your-service praises and humdrum apathy toward the plight of soldiers. He decides to revive his music career and jump into national radio contest that could catapult him to stardom, as well as provide a platform for his fellow soldiers. As Donny assembles a brotherhood band of veterans who share his post-war disillusionment, he makes music with his fallen comrade’s Julie Trojan (played by the vivacious wholesome Laura Osnes). Will Donny and Julie form the right music that will blast them to long-deserved fame?

Bandstand offers a sweep-clean commercialized depiction of the contents of World War II, with allusions to “camps” and the general “I’ve seen things” stories and rudimentary but still effective portrayal of post-traumatic stress disorder, though the musical industriously sings about the pains within soldiers who are expected to buck up in society. After all, it understands that “thank you for your service” is hollow if society gives no empathy or dues for their homeward-bound fighters.

Fathom Events will play Bandstand again on June 28. In other consolatory news, Bandstand will embark on a North American tour. Let the swing dancin’ live on.

GEEK GALCaroline Cao Dishes Out Mixed Thoughts on Broadway’s Aladdin: Colorblind Casting Gone Wrong?

$

I saw it. I finally snagged a student discount for the balcony seating of Disney’s Aladdin. Which is impressive, because student discounts for Disney Broadway productions like Lion King and Frozen are one-in-a-million.

Based on the 1992 animated Disney classic, the 2014 stage show is as invigorated as ever with Alan Menken’s score, the late Howard Ashman and Tim Rice’s lyricism, and direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw of Book of Mormon fame. But it is a bona fide product of commercial Disneyfication-dilatation of culture for the western gaze. Inspired by a tale from the Arabian Nights collection and set in a fictionalized Agrabah, we follow the exploits of young heart-of-gold thief Aladdin as he navigates his thievery through marketplaces and winning the heart of Princess Jasmine. A true Hollywoodized Middle East of sword swallowers and waving scimitars.

Critics had things to say about the maligned colorblind casting with the original Broadway cast, where performer of any brownness, but without Middle Eastern descent, personified characters of a Middle Eastern world. Is it less worse they didn’t go with an all-white cast? Sure? Is applying vague multiracial casting to a Middle Eastern realm still problematic? Yes! Monolithic brownness!

Chinese American Telly Leung now leads as Aladdin here, with Princess Jasmine played by Arielle Jacobs. They’re both wonderful performers, but their character archetypes just seemed constrained for the motions of the story rather than individualized as memorable characters.

The reprisal of Jonathan Freeman as the conniving palace advisor Jafar is also a mixed bag. It’s not that he wasn’t contented to re-embody the classic villain that garnered him acclaim in 1992; it’s that he is a white man playing a Middle Eastern villain that borders on racist caricature. His alumni status with the original film is what gave the creatives the license to condone the optics, but the optics between a white man voicing a villain of color versus a white man embodying a Middle Eastern live on stage are different, the latter having heavier implications.

At least there’s a stellar cast and magic up its sleeves. And everyone loves the Genie. The night of June 22 had standby Juwan Crawley as Genie (Major Attaway is the main Genie), with an effeminate voice that invokes a Sassy Gay Friend. And it works, he brought the house down with the showstopper “Friend Like Me” number, so famously sang by the late comedy genius Robin Williams (We all still miss him!). Also, Crawley ad-libs a Black Panther “I’m from Wakanda” joke that raked in the laughs, though a more critical mind will read it as a gratuitous tacked-on commercialism allusion.

Indeed, the Broadway Aladdin is chock-full of flashy pizzazz and flying shiny streamers that try to distract the audience from the flavorful westernization of Middle Eastern version designed for the consummation of the white gaze. Also, haha, food puns about Middle Eastern food! (“Did somebody say falafel?”). It’s designed to be kid-friendly indeed, but do kids deserve this flippant caricaturing of Middle Eastern culture?

With Guy Richie’s Aladdin live-adaptation on the horizon, this stage musical only exacerbates my worries of problems that arise when non-Middle Eastern have creative control over a product inspired by a Middle Eastern source material – and barely allow said people of Middle Eastern descent to have a leading voice in it. While reports indicate the movie production is making efforts to smooth over the problematics, I’m still skeptical. Sometimes the magic just gets lost in the orientalism.

No More Evening Gowns In Miss America Pageant? This Former Beauty Queen Says It’s The Wrong Move!

$
0
0

Luisa Diaz, author of the new book Sexy Is Timeless, and former Ms. Venezuela International shares her thoughts on the changes in the Miss America competition.

Recently, the Miss America Organization announced that it was eliminating both the swimsuit
competition and the evening gown competition.

Miss America has always been renowned for its scholarship program. The modern Miss America pageant has evolved from just a swimsuit competition to both a talent and a beauty contest. Former winners have taken their scholarships and have gone on to have successful careers in business, politics and media.

Personally, I think having a beautiful, shapely and well-toned body is nothing to be ashamed of, nor should be viewed as a victimization of women. With that being said, I can still understand women, who go on to have successful careers, not wanting a history of swimsuit photos popping up in every HR search.

However, when I heard that the evening gown competition was eliminated, I was shocked. A beauty pageant without evening gowns… Are you kidding me? What are they doing and what are they really trying to say? Why should they hold an all-women pageant and then try to hide what makes women different from men to begin with?

If this is the right thing to do, then why are they still having the young women compete for a tiara? Why don’t they just give the winner a briefcase, or a suit and a tie instead of a tiara? Would a woman in a suit really still want to wear a tiara?

All of these open-ended questions circulating in my brain make me believe that Miss America is
not moving forward with this new rule change. Rather, it is merely bowing to a well-meaning
group of women who are confusing femininity with feminism. This rule change is telling women
that their feminine traits are not worth celebrating or appreciating.

Must we have to dress like men and adopt masculine traits to be considered equals? What happened to embracing our individuality? Individuality is linked to our identity as women. Being born a woman means being born with different traits than men. These differences don’t mean that we are less intelligent than men. Why must we view celebrating our unique physical differences as demeaning or catering to male demands?

The Miss America pageant has always been dominated by a female viewership. That makes me wonder… Who are we making these changes for?

Women should celebrate who they were born to be. Don’t get me wrong, I am not talking about
sexuality here. I respect each person’s preference to his or her partner. What I am talking about is the issue created by women not embracing who they are. We are enough. We shouldn’t believe that we have to become someone who we are not. I believe a woman can run a
multimillion-dollar business or become the president of the United States in either high heels and lipstick or a suit and a tie—whatever she chooses. I respect it as long as it’s her own choice and is not influenced by the noise of society.

Wearing either a suit or a dress doesn’t change who we are. We shouldn’t let society limit what
we wear or delegate to us what we need to wear to be taken seriously? How many times have we
tried to be someone else and failed? Our best selves embrace who we are.

I believe women should be able to wear elegant dresses with confidence and embrace who they are with knowledge of their self-worth and strength.

You’ve been dumped by the love of your life. It’s pain, heartbreak and disappointment 24/7, and it’s almost too much to bear. Trying to get through it with well-intentioned family and friends doesn’t help – all you can think about is getting your ex back.

Well, Divas – fret no more. One man is determined to help the heartbroken win back their loves. Meet Lee WilsonCoach Lee – a best-selling author and breakup coach, and founder of myexbackcaoch.com.

Coach Lee is devoted to helping people get their ex back after a breakup. He has worked with celebrity couples, politicians, and everyday folks who want their ex back – and now he’s giving the DivaGals six secrets to get back yours!

1. Have No Contact After the Breakup. To get back with an ex, you gotta start here. That means no phone call, no texts, no emails, no trolling social media – you have to leave your ex alone. “When a breakup happens, people are so panicked they have the exact same response of someone beating on the door that goes unanswered. No contact is giving your ex the space they said they wanted – allowing the smoke to clear and allowing them to experience the breakup.”

2. Understand That No Contact Is A Good Thing. Yes, Divas – we know what you’re thinking. How the heck will no contact make my ex return to me? I haven’t told him I want him back. “If you don’t let them experience it and keep hounding him with your presence, he will never know that they don’t want the breakup. All he will do is keep running away from you. Giving them No Contact is a mature, adult and dignified response to a breakup. But it also has this incredibly effective side effect of getting an ex to miss you and want to come back to you.

3. Refrain From Dating During No Contact. It’s ok – and actually encouraged – to spend times with friends and have fun during No Contact, but you may want to hold off on dating. “If you do want this person back, you don’t want to look like the relationship meant nothing to you by dating too quickly, and to be honest, you’re probably not ready. What I do recommend is that you go out and spend time with friends and family, people who won’t break up with you. It’s also good if your ex happens to see on social media that you’re a person with a life and that he was not your entire world.”

4. Don’t Block or Delete Your Ex On Social Media. Ok, this one might seem strange. Aren’t you supposed to have No Contact – especially social media? “When you block them or delete them from your social media, it actually looks like they are getting to you a whole lot, having the opposite effect of what you want. Blocking and deleting tends to look petty and manipulative – like you’re trying to get a response from them. It shows that you’re having a difficult time and you’re trying to send a message. It gives them strength to know they’ve done the right thing with your breakup. You don’t have to go through that trouble. Just go about your day, you have things going on for you without the effort of blocking them and making such a big statement.

5. When Your Ex Does Reach Out – Don’t Ignore Him. All you No Contact has paid off and your ex has reached out to you. “If you ignore your ex, he may think you don’t want to speak to him. And they don’t want to seem needy or clingy – so by ignoring them, you’re helping them to move on. If you want this person back it’s ok to interact with them. If they are reaching out it means they miss you and you can take advantage of that situation.

6. Let Your Ex Carry The Conversation. Your hard work of No Contact has paid off. Now let your ex do the work to win you back. “If he asks a question, you answer and there’s nothing more to say. Your ex will feel that. When he is the one carrying on the conversation, it doesn’t kill the momentum of you reconciling. You not making demands or asking a ton of questions gives them a little more space if they aren’t ready yet, and it very advantageous things to do. When they reach out the second time, then it’s ok to say, we should get together. It lets them know you’re open to reconnecting.

Ready to get your ex back, Divas? Stay strong, follow these rules and know that we are rooting for you!

Right move, Scarlett Johansson. Let the transgender people have their own voice.

The New York Musical Theatre Festival’s mission to diversify theatre is paying off with a rockin’ charmer., Interstate the musical pulls no punches on intersectionalities as a pop-rock poetry musical. The musical follows Dash (Jon Viktor Corpuz with kinetic spoken-word speed), a transgender spoken word performer, who sets off on a cross-country tour with his best friend Adrian (Angel Lin with a rocking and no-nonsense inflection), a lesbian singer-songwriter. Put two-and-two, they form the band Queer Malady. Meanwhile, a starry-eyed fan watches the pair from the Internet: Sushma Sama has tender eyes as high-schooler Henry. I had the treat of sitting close-up to a majority of Sama’s scenes, where I could see the wide-eyed torrent as their character vlogs adventures with equal parts dorkiness, anxiety, and exhilaration. Director Jessi D. Hill meticulously navigates a minimalist set with the ensemble crossing and intersecting into the characters’ lives, sometimes as gossipers, or supporters of the heroes.

With some autobiographical touches, Writers and lyricists Kit Yan and Melissa Li do not shirk on the intersectional dynamics, lining situations with delicate on-point touches about queer suffering and affirmation. From an Asian man happy to play into the toxic (and western) masculinity as he harasses Adrian and an Asian patriarch (Kiet Tai Cao) who may be enthusiastic about his son’s transition but not just out of support but masculine pride, resulting to a darkly funny line, “When you told me you were to become a boy, I thought, UPGRADE.” Dash is hooked on the archaic “win the girl” mentality, which spurs his romantic pursuit of his lesbian friend and threatens their platonic rapport. The intersectionality is not sidelined but inherent to the boiling plot tensions.

The words do not shy away from the mental drudgery it takes for a queer Asian person of color to play deferent against bigotry and cognitive dissonance on whether to react or stay quiet in situations beyond control. In the hands of heteronormative maker, the material would be heavy-handed, but told by queer voices the musical is aptly heavy with feels. The political is personal. This musical is a win and deserves to extend beyond its five-day run, wherever the road may take it.
